Archdeacon arraigned on fraud charges

The former Executive Archdeacon of Brandon appeared before a Manitoba court yesterday to answer charges that he had embezzled approximately $190,000 from diocesan coffers.

The Ven. Noah James Bernard Njegovan, 30, was arraigned on charges of having committed a fraud of over $5,000 while serving as executive archdeacon of the diocese and assistant to his father, Bishop James Njegovan of Brandon.

The former Executive Archdeacon of Brandon appeared before a Manitoba court yesterday to answer charges that he had embezzled approximately $190,000 from diocesan coffers.

The Ven. Noah James Bernard Njegovan, 30, was arraigned on charges of having committed a fraud of over $5,000 while serving as executive archdeacon of the diocese and assistant to his father, Bishop James Njegovan of Brandon.

Mr. Njegovan was released on bail and is set to return to court on 9 May 2013.

Ugandan bishop arrested in anti-corruption protest

A retired Ugandan bishop was arrested this week, accused of disturbing the peace and unlawful assembly for handing out pamphlets denouncing government corruption.

On 4 Feb 2013, Dr. Zac Niringiye, the former Assistant Bishop of Kampala, and seven other democracy activists were arrested by police at Makere University as they handed out leaflets documenting that called for action to combat corruption. After bail was posted the bishop was released from custody but ordered to return for a hearing before a magistrate on 14 Feb.

Continuing Church priest arrested in Moscow

A continuing Anglican priest has been arrested by customs officials at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, accused of smuggling cocaine into Russia.

State television broadcaster Rossiya 24 reported that Fr. Fabio Ricardo Rodriguez was arrested on 30 Jan 2013 after the priest’s behavior attracted the attention of Federal Drug Control Service officers.  After his arrival from Paris, Fr. Rodriguez appeared unwell and acted in a nervous manner.

Yousef Nadarkhani thanks Christians for their prayers

Yousef Nadarkhani, the Iranian pastor jailed sentenced to death for apostasy from Islam but released after an international protest campaign was in London this month to thank Christian Solidarity Worldwide for its advocacy on his behalf.

On 10 Nov 2012 Pastor Nadarkhani spoke to the For Such a Time as This conference through an interpreter thanking Christians in the West for their prayers and petitions on his behalf.  The following Sunday he preached at Holy Trinity Brompton in London, speaking to the plight of Christians in Iran.

Retired cathedral dean arrested for drug trafficking

The former Archdeacon of Maine and Dean of St Luke’s Cathedral in Portland has been arrested for drug trafficking.

On 1 Nov 2012 deputies from the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Office arrested the Very Rev. Stephen Foote and charged him with a class C felony: smuggling a controlled substance into the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wicasset, Maine.

Retired Bishop of Gloucester arrested for child abuse

The former Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt. Rev. Peter Ball has been arrested for child abuse.

On 14 Nov 2012 detectives from the Sussex Police serious crimes unit arrested the retired bishop at his home Manor Lodge in the Somerset village of Aller – a “grace and favour” property owned by the Duchy of Cornwall – and charged him with eight counts of abuse on boys aged 12 to their early 20's committed approximately 25 years ago while Bishop Ball served as Bishop of Lewes in the Diocese of Chichester.

Boston priest accused of child rape found dead

The Massachusetts priest facing charges of attempted child rape and sexual abuse has died.

“With sorrow I received news this evening that the Rev. Paul LaCharite has died, an apparent suicide.  This is a shocking tragedy, and I've asked our diocesan community to pray for everyone concerned,” the Bishop of Massachusetts, the Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw said last night.

The Massachusetts priest facing charges of attempted child rape and sexual abuse has died.

Boston police are investigating the death of Fr. LaCharite, whose body was found at his home on 26 September 2012, and are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

Iran frees Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani

The Iranian Christian pastor awaiting execution has been acquitted of the charge of apostasy and released from imprisonment.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reports that at an 8 September 2012 hearing, the court overturned Yousef Nadarkhani’s 2010 conviction for apostasy, finding him guilty instead of proselytizing Muslims.  He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, but released for time served.

Massachusetts priest arrested for attempted child rape

A retired Diocese of Massachusetts priest has been arrested by police and charged on one count of assault to rape a child and three counts of indecent assault and battery.

On 7 September 2012, the Middlesex District Attorney's office reported the Rev. Paul A. LaCharite (65) had been taken into custody by the Somerville Police Department.

The First Islamist President of Egypt

The majority of Egyptians have been holding their breath over the last few days. They were eagerly awaiting the announcement of the first president after the 25th of January Revolution. It was announced this afternoon, the 24th of June, that Mohammed Mursi won 51.7 percent of the votes, while his opponent Ahmed Shafiq won 48.3 percent. By this close margin, Mursi became the first Islamist President in Egypt.

... The fear now is that Mursi will not fulfill his promises, and will try to control the government, the police and the upcoming parliamentary elections. If Egypt became an Islamic state, this will mean that Christians will be marginalized. It is true that today he withdrew from the Muslim Brotherhood Party; however he will continue to be influenced by their ideology. Some writers express their fears that if the Muslim Brotherhood gained control of Egypt, they will stay in power for more than 100 years.

Easter message from Archbishop Henry Orombi of Uganda

Hardly three months have gone by since we celebrated Christmas.  This was a great reminder of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem.

During Easter we focus on the climax of God’s divine love, Jesus demonstrated to humanity.  In a world suffering from lack of love during his earthly life, though he did no wrong, he faced the cruelty of human selfish hearts.  He was arrested by the Religious Establishment and tortured to the point of exhaustion.  The Romans finally sentenced him to death.  He was crucified between two (2) criminals.  In his pain and agony he cried to God to forgive his tormentors.  His company on that Cross represented the fallen class of humanity, the humble, the poor, the helpless and homeless.

Episcopal Church response to the death of Trayvon Martin

Several of our diocesan clergy have expressed concern and interest in the emerging Trayvon Martin death and shooting that has engendered a call for justice across our nation.

 

Please pray for the City and community of Sanford as we attempt to seek justice while maintaining a peace that honors this young man's life, and moves our community to wholeness and healing.

 

There are two rallies planned for those who want to express their concerns over how the matter of Trayvon Martin has been handled after his shooting death by George Zimmerman on February 26th.

A Chinese Christian leader sentenced to two years of “reeducation through labour” has been released early from detention, the China Aid Association (CAA) reports.

The jailing of Pastor Shi Enhao, deputy leader of the Chinese House Church Alliance (CHCA), prompted an international outcry last year, and was part of a wider crackdown on evangelical Christians by the Chinese authorities.

A clergy wives’ conference has been cancelled following intervention by the Zimbabwe secret police.

On 13 January 2012 the Diocese of Harare was contacted by the management of the Jamaica Inn, a hotel/conference centre outside Harare, informing Bishop Chad Gandiya that agents of the CIO had visited the Inn the night.  The manager reported that she had been instructed by the security services to cancel the meeting which was scheduled for later that day.

Indian priest convicted of blasphemy by Sharia court for baptizing Christians

The All India Christian Council has condemned an indictment issued by a Sharia law court in Kashmir that charges two priests with blasphemy by enticing Muslims to convert to Christianity.

On 11 January 2012 Muslim leaders in the Northern Indian state issued a statement saying that "it was proved beyond doubt that the accused" the vicar of All Saints Church in Srinigar, the Rev Chander Mani Khanna of the Church of North India, "along with other accomplices was luring Muslim people to change their religion."
