With key themes on the agenda such as mission and the role of the Bible in the Church, the recently concluded meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council in New Zealand could have been an opportunity to address the real cause of the spiritual and institutional crisis which has overtaken the Anglican Communion during the past ten years.

The Church in Wales has declined to endorse the Anglican Covenant.  The Governing Body – the Welsh church’s general synod – on 18 April 2012 passed a motion calling for further study of the covenant in light of its failure to be affirmed by a majority of dioceses of the Church of England.

Lambeth Palace has released a statement today saying the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams will step down from office by the end of December.

Dr. Williams has accepted the position of Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge University.

Dr. Williams has accepted the position of Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge University. 

“It has been an immense privilege to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury over the past decade, and moving on has not been an easy decision,” Dr. Williams said.

The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) has welcomed the release of a general synod paper under the signature of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York that addresses the province-in-formation’s relationship to the Church of England.

In a statement released on 21 January 2012, the primate of the ACNA, Archbishop Robert Duncan of Pittsburgh said the province-in-formation was “encouraged by the desire of the Church of England to continue to embrace the Anglican Church in North America and remain in solidarity with us as we proclaim the Gospel message and truth as revealed in Scripture in the way it has always been understood in Anglican formularies.”

La Provincia Anglicana del Cono Sur – the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone – has endorsed the Anglican Covenant.

Meeting in Asunción, Paraguay from 3-11 November 2011, the provincial executive committee and the province’s House of Bishops endorsed the inter-Anglican agreement that sets the parameters of doctrine and discipline for the Anglican Communion.
